Dress of Marie de Medici

 

  The gown skirt and the petticoat are formed to the barrel shape by large support so called French fartingale as we can see e.g. on the drawing from 1625, Bibliotheque National (J. Arnold – Queen Elizabeth's Wardrobe Unlock'd, p. 199). The back support is raised up by padded roll made of white fabric stuffed by fleece. Such pads are shown on a e.g. wood engraving from 1590, private collection. J. Arnold – Queen Elizabeth's Wardrobe Unlock'd, p. 197.
