Baroque Overgown

For a formal or court dress, an overgown is worn over the underbodice and the petticoat. This overgown is made of red satin with white damask lining and consists of the skirt pleated by cartridge pleating and the open bodice laced by red ribbon with short sleeves. In the waistline, which is typically quite high, is a ribbon sash, on which necessary things can be fastened (eg. fan). The dress is decorated with laces, ribbons, braids and pearls. This dress presents an early baroque  dress dated to ca 1635 and is inspired by period pictures – engravings of Bosse and paintings of Van Dyck or Rubens (eg. “Garden of Love”).
