Baroque smock and stays
The silk
smock is made according to the extant linen smock of Spanish or
Portugal origin (ca 1690, Royal Collection, Winsdor). The
original could belong to Catherine of Braganza or her ladies.
The pattern is published by J. Arnold in Patterns of Fashion 4.
The stays are based on extant piece from Victoria and Albert
Museum (1660-80). The pattern and the detail construction are
described in Seventeenth-century Woman’s Dress Patterns, S.
North and J. Tiramani.
